Portrait of Spiros Halaris
Spiros Halaris tells all about his fashion illustrations and his latest show in London.
Spiros Halaris is a multi-disciplinary illustrator who has collaborated on major commercial projects with fashion houses and magazines whilst creating independently fine artworks that are translated in many different media. In an exclusive interview he tells fabulous noble all about his creative vision and his aspirations for the future.
How did you become an Illustrator?
I started out as a graphic designer and I then progressed, initially self-taught, into more illustrative fields.
What was the first ad or artwork that inspired you?
I would be lying if I say that I remember the first one that ever caught my eye. But I do know that I was fascinated by the ads and photography in glossy hardbound magazines. The portraits and the postures in these magazines formed my illustrative aesthetic.
Can you outline your creative background?
My creative background is a very diverse mixture of art, graphic design and fashion illustration studies.
Where do you find your inspiration? What captures your attention in everyday life, graphics or art?
My inspirations vary greatly. I usually find inspiration in anything visually intriguing; a vase, a billboard or a button. In everyday life, graphics catch my eye more often than art. Graphics dominate our lives so chances are that there will be at least one inspiring or intriguing item in the daily pile of visual information that we consume.
What is the process you go through to build your imagery?
As a first step I will usually research thoroughly the subject that I want to illustrate. Then I will usually find a detail that grasps my attention and I will start from there.
How do you describe your style?
A minimalist play of deconstructive elements that altogether construct a dramatic pop aesthetic with vibrant colours and graphics.
What tools do you use? Digital? Hand?
I use digital tools but also some handmade elements.
How do you define good graphic art?
It has to be bold, striking and memorable.
What does your studio look like?
It looks like a newsagent’s because apart from the desk spaces, the rest of the area is filled with magazines and books that I’ve collected over the years.
What do you think about the fast moving pace of the world of illustration?
I am glad that I am part of this fast moving industry! It’s moving extremely fast and it’s breaking creative boundaries; what could be better than that?
Whose portrait would you most like to do?
I would like to do the portrait of Antony Hegarty at some point. A portrait that will interpret and express his vision as an artist.
What artist would you like to collaborate with (from the past or present)?
I am fascinated by the world of Takashi Murakami and his perception around art and design. I would love to collaborate with him and his group of artists.
What project are you most proud of?
I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Design Museum and the Christian Louboutin exhibition a couple of months ago and I am really proud of the work that came out of it.
Which blogs and magazines do you read?
I do not have blogs that I read constantly, it’s usually more of a random browse. Favourite publications would be Monocle, POP and Man About Town.
What is the last exhibition you went to?
It was the spectacular Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Tate Modern. It was a very insightful retrospective of her work and her passion about her art is really inspiring.
If you could own any artwork in the world, which one would it be?
It would be any piece by David Hockney. His use of colour and composition is so unique and his pieces make you feel so calm.
What would you be if not an artist?
I really don’t know! But I do know that I wouldn’t be as happy as I am now doing what satisfies me the most.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently completing an exciting project for Printemps in Paris and I’m doing some pieces for my upcoming exhibition in London.
Any plans for the future?
Travel the world with a laptop and a pad!
Seriously now, with regards to art and illustrating, I’m looking forward to completing the design of my own collection of scarves. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with Úna Burke, an amazing fashion designer.
